#11 Pioneers Topple Elmira & NJCU in First Home Meets

SHU prevails in first home meets in program history.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It was another historic day for the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling program as it hosted its first home meet. The Pioneers came through with a pair of victories on Monday, defeating Elmira, 23-16, before taking down #14 New Jersey City University, 25-15.
Sacred Heart improved its dual meet record to 3-1.
Sacred Heart was in a 15-0 hole after the first five bouts, but only let the Eagles score one more point the rest of the night. Savannah Vanse only need 1:49 to get SHU on the board with a pin in her 136-pound bout over Kayla Lanning.
After Tays Pascual received a forfeit at 143 pounds, Madison Sandquist bumped up a weight class to win, 8-4, over Skylah Chakouian at 155 pounds. With a forfeit coming at 191 pounds, Jacklyn Smith secured the team victory as she pinned Hazel Dahlquist in 31 seconds at 170 pounds.
Against the Gothic Knights, SHU was down 15-0 again, but closed out the match with five-straight victories. Following a forfeit at 136 pounds, Pascual pinned Lockslea Mayers in 1:21 at 143 pounds. Sandquist won for the second time as she pinned Patience Hevi in just 1:02 to tie the match at 15-15.
Another forfeit at 170 pounds put the Pioneers in the lead, 20-15. The final bout at 191 pounds was a battle of ranked wrestlers. No. 6 Ashley Reed wrapped up the team triumph as she pinned seventh-ranked Sandy Guerrero in 1:35.
The Pioneers are off until January 8 when they travel to Delaware Valley to face the Rams and NJCU.
