SHU Falls to Tigers 3-1
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Pioneers poured the shots on the RIT net in the third period attempting to erase a two-goal deficit. It wasn't enough to get a win in the battle of Atlantic Hockey first-place teams.
The Tigers, outshot 38-22 overall, won 3-1 to end Sacred Heart's unbeaten streak at five games despite a 22-5 disparity in third-period pucks on target.
Graduate student Todd Goehring's sixth goal of the season cut the margin to 2-1 late in the third before the visitors pulled senior Lukc Lush, who made 19 saves, with 1:49 left. The extra skater provided a few chances but nothing of grade-A variety before the home team found an empty net.
Goehring now has a goal in each of his last four games.
"It was a really good hockey game tonight," said C.J. Marottolo, Sacred Heart's head coach. "I thought we got better as the game went along. I was encouraged by our third period effort, and there are a lot of positives to build off overall. They got round one, but we will fight and claw to get round two. Our guys are looking forward to the challenge."
They meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m.
