Pioneers win eighth match in a row
JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team kept its winning streak going on Saturday with a pair of victories. The 11th-ranked Pioneers toppled Delaware Valley, 45-2, then rolled past the host and No. 16 New Jersey City, 28-16.
The pair of victories improved the Pioneers to 10-2 as they won their eighth match in a row.
Sixth-ranked Aaliyah Payne-Parris gave SHU a quick lead against NJCU when she pinned Duane Palaez in just 52 seconds at 101 pounds. Two bouts later Nohea Moniz produced a 12-2 tech fall at 116 pounds over Bella Serrano.
At 123 pounds, Tati Walker gave the Pioneers a lead they would not relinquish with her 6-0 decision against Somaia Elokda. Three forfeits by the Gothic Knights secured the victory.
In the opening meet against Delaware Valley, the Pioneers won all four matches that were contested as the Aggies forfeited the other six bouts. Belen Rios (130 pounds) and Tays Pascual (136 pounds) recorded back-to-back decisions. Temi Sanusi posted a 11-0 tech fall at 155 pounds and Jacklyn Smith capped the match with a pin at the 2:56 mark at 170 pounds.
Sacred Heart is back in action January 6-7 at the NWCA National Duals.
