No. 13 Pioneers Capture Northeast Duals Title

SHU upsets 11th-ranked Gannon and East Stroudsburg

ERIE, Pa. – In only its second season, the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team is establishing itself as one of the best teams in the region. After Sunday's performance, the 13^th-ranked Pioneers are at the top as they won the Northeast Duals, hosted by Gannon University, with a 4-0 record.

The four victories improved SHU's record to 6-2.

The Pioneers captured the title by beating the 11^th-ranked host Knights, 25-20, after topping East Stroudsburg, who's also ranked 11^th, 35-13. SHU started the day by dominating Alvernia, 50-0, then toppling Elmira, 44-4.

It was a close affair between the Pioneers and Knights in the championship match. Sacred Heart had a 15-8 advantage after seventh-ranked Alexandra Fitzgerald pinned Zoe Gaetjens at 130 pounds. Gannon won the next two to grab a 17-15 lead, but No. 8 Madison Sandquist gave SHU a 20-17 lead when she pinned Lili Ujfalvi at 155 pounds. The Knights pulled even with a win at 170 pounds, but Cara Broadus came through with a pin at 191 pounds to secure the victory.

Against ESU, the match was tied, 10-10, after four matches, but it was all Sacred Heart from there. Fitzgerald pinned number five Mia Maculuso in 1:14 then Sandquist put the team contest out of reach with a tech fall to stake SHU to a 25-13 lead. Jacklyn Smith added a pin in just 90 seconds at 171 pounds.

During the morning session, the Pioneers only lost one match. The five victories against Elmira were won by either pin or tech fall. The four pins versus Alvernia came in a total of 124 seconds, including Smith who only needed 11 seconds to get the win.

Sacred Heart hosts its first home meets of the season on Sunday when it welcomes eighth-ranked Tiffin and Western New England.
