STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the final day of the Northeast Conference Championships at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Center on Monday. The women finished in fifth place with a total of 74.5 points while the men claimed eighth at 30 points.
On the women's side, three Pioneers medaled in their events. Kaylee Stenderowicz took home first as she broke the school record in the triple jump with a 12.03m leap. Ashley Matakevich held the previous record in 2011 at 12.00. The junior also earned NEC Field Athlete of the Meet for jumps. Stenderowicz is the second Pioneer in program history, male or female, to medal in the triple jump. Michele Shawah was the first champion in the event and SHU's first individual champion in 2000, the same year the Pioneers competed in their first year at the Division I level.
After earning a silver medal in shot put on day one, Abbie Mokwuah earned her second medal when she finished first in weight throw with a personal-best throw of 14.95m. The graduate student received NEC Field Athlete of the Meet for throws for her accomplishment. Molly Kearns joined Mokwuah on the podium in the event as she threw for a PR 14.92m to take silver.
Nicole Szilagyi (8.98) and Kimora Johnson (9.23) notched personal bests in the 60m Hurdles, crossing the finish line for fourth and seventh, respectively. Emily Bloom (6
th, 5:24.04 PR), Angela Kaiser (7
th, 5:26.88) and Sarah Mandelkow (9
th, 5:35.16) placed in the top 10 in the 1-mile run. Sarah Lamoreaux (1.53) and Madeline Archangelo (1.48m) posted sixth and eighth place performances in the high jump. Alexa Kavarsky ran a PR of 1:20.07 to clinch seventh in the 500m dash. Tara Brody (triple jump, 10.84m), Maya Mocarski (60m dash, 7.98) and Allison Plante (weight throw, 14.07m) recorded eighth in their events.
In the 4000 medley relay, Angela Kaiser, Prithika Satish, Megan Schneider and Bloom finished in seventh at 12:59.53. Brody, Kavarsky, Tori Chorzepa and Megan Schneider ran a time of 4:07.72 to finish ninth in the 4x400m relay.
On the men's side, the team of
Lance Hayes,
Rafael Mahario,
Jonathan Mahon and
Joseph Morrone claimed third in the 4x400m relay at 3:17.52.
Ryan Corbett,
Kevin Martin,
Shane Negast and
Jordan Leon notched sixth on a time of 10:22.27 in the 4000 medley relay.
Individually, two Pioneers earned sixth in their events. Hayes ran a PR 1:05.56 in the 500m dash while
Daniel DiGangi tied with a personal best 4.30m in the pole vault.
