Broadus and Smith post big victories down the stretch.
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Big victories down the stretch propelled the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team to a victory on Saturday. The eighth-ranked Pioneers went on the road to drop #11 East Stroudsburg, 33-11.
The win improved the Pioneers to 14-4 while the Spartans fell to 7-4.
The two teams split the first four bouts with the Pioneers holding an 11-8 advantage. Third-ranked Alexandra Fitzgerald's decision and a tech fall from Veronica Whitacre at 136 pounds gave the Pioneers an 18-8 advantage.
SHU put the team match away in the last three bouts, starting with a forfeit at 155 pounds. Number five Cara Broadus posted a 10-0 tech fall at 170 pounds then Jacklyn Smith shut the door when she pinned Damiana Racciatti in two minutes at 191 pounds.
The Pioneer are back in action on January 29 at Elmira College.
