SHU Sits in Fourth After Opening Day of Nassau Intercollegiate

Three Pios rank in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard
GLEN COVE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University men's golf team ended the first two rounds of the Nassau Intercollegiate, hosted by LIU at the Nassau Country Club, in fourth place in the talented 10-team field.
As a team, the Pios carded a combined score of 586 (+26) after two straight rounds of 293 (+13). Sacred Heart trails third-place Villanova (+25) by just one stroke. The Pioneers lead Northeast Conference (NEC) foes Le Moyne (+40), FDU (+57) and Merrimack (+67) while hosting LIU paces the tournament at +9.
SHU is led by three golfers who finished the first two rounds within one stroke of each other. Pacing this group is Conor Handley, who carded a four-over 144 (71-73) to sit in seventh. He posted two birdies in both rounds to finish with four on the day.
Sacred Heart's Pablo Lacayo is in eighth place on the individual leaderboard with a combined score of 145 (+5). The sophomore carded a 73 to open the day before closing it with a 72. He finished the first two rounds with a team-best seven birdies, posting four in round two.
Mike Rothberg rounded out the Pios' trio of golfers in the top 10 in a tie for ninth. The sophomore from Fairfield, Conn., carded scores of 74 and 72 for a six over 146. Rothberg was at his best in round two, posting five of his six birdies on the day in his second 18 holes.
Jason Pelley placed next on the leaderboard for the Pioneers in tie for 22nd. The junior from London, England, tallied an 11-over 151 today, shooting a 75 in round one and a 76 in round two.
Alex Turlik wrapped up SHU's five-person roster in a tie for 43rd. The sophomore from Clackmannanshire, Scotland, shot a combined 156 (+17).
The third and final round of the Nassau Intercollegiate is slated to start tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
