Pioneers End Fall Slate with Fifth-Place Finish at Nassau Intercollegiate

Four of SHU’s golfers finished the event in the top 15
GLEN COVE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule by finishing fifth at the Nassau Intercollegiate, hosted by LIU on Monday and Tuesday at the Nassau Country Club.
The Pioneers posted a 54-hole score of 894 (+54) to finish fifth, edging Northeast Conference (NEC) opponents Le Moyne (+62), FDU (+89) and Merrimack (+108). LIU took the top spot in its home event with a combined score of 861 (+21).
The four scoring Pioneers all finished very closely to each other, as the quartet was separated by just one stroke. Leading the way was Pablo Lacayo in T13th. The sophomore from Managua, Nicaragua, shot rounds of 73, 72 and 78 for a final score of 223 (+13).
Three Pios placed in a tie for 15th, as Conor Handley, Jason Pelley and Mike Rothberg all carded final scores of 224 (+14). Pelley (75-76-73) led the group today with a team-best 73 (+1), while Handley (71-73-80) and Rothberg (74-72-78) were better over the first two rounds. Rothberg has finished in the top 15 for three straight weeks, while Handley and Pelley have done so in two straight.
Alex Turlik completed Sacred Heart's five-person roster in a tie for 40th. The sophomore ended the event with a score of 236 (+26), shooting 81, 76, and 79 over the three rounds.
