Pioneers Ready for Road Tilt at Morgan State

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team remains on the road for its second game of the 2023-24 season, as it heads to Maryland on Sunday, Nov. 12, for a 2 p.m. clash against Morgan State at the Lady Bears' Hill Field House.

OPENING TIP
Despite an obvious height disadvantage, the Pioneers finished one rebound shy of the Rams on Tuesday, 38-37. A. Wood led the SHU effort on the glass with 11 rebounds, two shy of tying her career high. Kelsey Wood also did well in the post with six rebounds over 14 minutes.
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE
The Lady Bears opened 2023-24 with a comeback 59-57 win over NAIA program Washington Adventist on Monday. Morgan State trailed by as much as 13 points in the game and by six heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bears did not take the lead in the fourth quarter until just 25 seconds remained, but that proved to be enough as some clutch late free throws sealed a season-opening win. Sophomore forward Kaia Ponder stole the show for the Lady Bears with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double. She tallied 14 points and eight boards in the second half alone to help spark the comeback. Joelle Johnson (11pts, 8reb) and Gabrielle Johnson (10pts, 6reb) were also critical to the Morgan State victory.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE LADY BEARS
The all-time series is a short one, as the two teams have met just once prior to Sunday. Sacred Heart's 67-66 win on Dec. 29, 2000, at the Pitt Center marked the lone meeting between the Pios and Lady Bears.
