FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
Carly Greene stopped 27 shots and
Iyla Ryskamp scored a goal but it was not enough for the Sacred Heart Women's Hockey Team to end a long unbeaten streak.
First-place Long Island University scored twice in the first period on the way to a 2-1 win at the Martire Family Arena that improved its unbeaten streak to nine games.
"We didn't quit and that was definitely a positive," said SHU Head Coach
Thomas O'Malley. "We played hard against them. They were a very good team. We just came up short and had a tough time putting the puck in the net. The effort was there."
Ryskamp (Orono, Minn.), a first-year winger, cut the lead in half midway through the second period when she found a rebound on the edge of the crease and slid it past goalie Annie Abramson for her seventh tally this winter.
Olivia LaRoche got the assist.
Greene, a sophomore from Minnetonka, Minn., who stopped a breakaway in the second period, made nine saves in the third period to keep it close.
The second game of the home-and-home series with the Sharks is Saturday night at 7 on Long Island.
