Big Red Dancing For First Time in 11 Years

Pryor Powers Pios to NEC Tourney Title, Play Southern on Wednesday

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team is going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

First-year sensation Ny'Ceara Pryor scored 20 points, pulled down 11 boards and dished out seven assists as the Pioneers beat Fairleigh Dickinson 72-60 to capture the Northeast Conference Tournament Championship while grabbing the automatic spot in the big dance. SHU will find out where it's headed and who it will play tonight at 8 p.m.

Pryor, the conference player, rookie and defensive player of the year, helped the No. 2 seed Pios knock off the top-seeded Knights for a third straight time this season. The Baltimore, Md., native and her teammates blew open a close game with a 24-point fourth quarter on the way to shooting 50 percent on field goals in the game.

Olivia Tucker chipped in 16 points, while Sierra Johnson had 12 and Amelia Wood had 11 and four steals as the visitors improved to 18-13 overall.

All-Tournament Team:
Ny'Ceara Pryor (MVP)
Olivia Tucker

Of Note
Both teams traded buckets but Sacred Heart held onto the lead throughout the first half, taking a 40-35 lead into the break.

FDU came out in the third quarter outscoring the visitor 14-8. The Knights drained back-to-back three-pointers to get back in the lead, with 1:55 left. Pryor got the board off a Ciara Brannon miss and put it back in the basket to make it a one-point game, 49-48 heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, graduate student Sajada Bonner drained a three-pointer to grab the lead again. FDU responded with five unanswered points for the 54-51 advantage.

Junior Kelsey Wood scored on a layup at 5:40 and the Pioneers went on a 10-2 run. Pryor put the icing on the cake with back-to-back buckets before SHU put the game away from the free-throw line.
