MILFORD, Conn. – This was the perfect way to prepare for their conference championship tournament this weekend. The Sacred Heart Women's Golf Team played consistently well for a second straight day to win the SHU Spring Invitational.
Medalist honors went to Pios junior Chantal El Chaib, who followed a 72 in good conditions with a 74 in more challenging elements to finish with a 146 in a steady mist.
"We are used to playing in this weather," said El Chaib, a native of United Arab Emirates. "We have more confidence on our home course, but we knew we had to play better to win."
SHU and BU were tied after round one on Sunday at nine under, 20 strokes better than third-place Hartford. The home team, despite the conditions, improved by two strokes to end up 13 ahead of the Terriers.
The highlight of the day came from SHU junior Margot Rouquette, who eagled the 480-yard, par-5 sixth hole. The native of France hit driver and then used a three-wood fade from 198 yards to stick it within 16 feet of the cup. Her downhill putt was dead on and ignited a round of 70, the best for any Pio player.
The NEC Championships, the most significant event of the year for the Pios, is up next on April 23 to 25 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
"We are looking forward to it, we are very confident," said El Chaib, part of the 2022 NEC Championship squad. "We are going in with the same mentality as we did last year. This (SHU Invite) tournament helps us, it's good to go to Florida with a win."
SHU Head Coach Matt McGreevy, who coached both SHU teams into the NCAAs last Spring, loved what he saw on the wet course today. "I was happy with the way we responded to having a team close to us," he said. "This was a great tune-up for the NEC. We were put in a position to have to perform, and we did."
