Pios collect eight top-50 finishes
PHILADELPHIA (October 28, 2024) – A 20th-place finish by Jacob Bartel (La Mesa, Calif.), out of 100 fencers in the foil, was the top finish on the day for the Sacred Heart University men's fencing team on Sunday, as the team competed at the Nikki Franke Classic, hosted by Temple.
Foil was the most successful event of the day for the Pioneers. SHU had five fencers competing in the weapon and all five of them finished in the top 50. Bartel led the way, as he went 2-2 in the first round of pool play and 3-1 in the second to take the 16th seed in the knockout portion of the event. He received a bye through the round of 128 and then scored a 15-10 win over teammate Alexander Ligos (Basking Ridge, N.J.) in an all-SHU matchup in the round of 64, before bowing out in the round of 32.
Chaissen Costello (Tiverton, R.I.) finished 30th, but narrowly missed out on a top-16 finish instead. He suffered a tight, 15-13 defeat at the hands of Boston College's Elijah Onik in the round of 32.
Gleb Syomichev (Westport, Conn.) took 33rd, David Belluomo was 46th and Ligos placed 50th, to round out SHU's participation in the foil.
The Pioneers also recorded a trio of top-50 finishes in the other two events on Sunday. Declan McAdoo (Golden, Colo.) and Brennan Robins (Selden, N.Y.) were 42nd and 43rd, respectively, in the 104-fencer epee field, while Oliver Lindholm (Atlanta, Ga.) finished 48th, out of 83, in the sabre.
SHU is back in action on Saturday at Smith College, for the NEIFC Fall Invitational.
