Foil squad leads way
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 11, 2024) – The Sacred Heart University men's fencing team went 51-15 in the foil on Sunday and posted winning records in all three weapons, on the way to six wins at the Vassar Invitational. The Pioneers finished 6-2 on the day.
The Pioneers had seven different athletes win at least 10 bouts over the course of the day, led by a 14-3 record from first year Oliver Lindholm (Atlanta, Ga.) in the sabre. Junior David Belluomo and sophomore Chaissen Costello (Tiverton, R.I.) both went 11-4 to lead the foil squad. In addition to the foil success, Sacred Heart was 46-26 in the sabre and 43-28 in the epee on the day.
SHU started off the day with six straight wins, beginning with a 21-6 victory over Haverford, behind an 8-1 outing from the foil team. The Pioneers nearly whitewashed Yeshiva, 26-1, with both foil and epee posting perfect, 9-0 records in the match. Three straight 8-1 foil performances followed, as Sacred Heart bettered Cleveland State (21-6), LIU (17-10) and Hunter (23-4). In the latter, epee went 8-1 as well, while sabre checked in at 7-2. The foil squad then went 7-2 as part of a 16-11 win over Stevens, as SHU improved to 6-0 on the day.
Sunday ended with a pair of losses, as the Pioneers fell to Yale, 19-8, and Johns Hopkins, 15-12.
SHU is back in action on Nov. 23-24, when they travel to Brown for the NFC Championship.
