Pioneers Secure Nail-biting Win Over Crusaders

Four Pioneers collect goals


FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team secured a home-opening win against Holy Cross Thursday, 4-2, in a late-stretch push. The Pios received goals from David Garcia Gallego, Aidan Borra, Alejo Woelper and Pablo Alcoba.

Of Note:
With a beautifully placed cross in the top of the box from Borra, Garcia Gallego was able to send the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Pios on the board first in the 20th minute. 
 
The Pioneers held the Crusaders shotless heading into the halftime break.
 
SHU picked up its second goal on a corner opportunity. Zach Lorenz sent in a long service that met the head of Alcoba who perfectly placed the ball in the low, far corner of the net.
 
The Crusaders capitalized just a minute later as Brock Frasier passed keeper, Andrew Hammersley, to score a low center goal from Marcus Williams.
 
Holy Cross tied the game in the 76th minute as Jonathan Klein headed a ball in the bottom left corner of the net.
 
With four minutes remaining, Woelper scored off of a free kick a few yards from the box sending the ball in, on the ground, right around the wall of defenders for a low left goal. The sophomore's goal is the first of his career. 
 
With two minutes remaining, Alex Almuzara drew keeper Tristan Stephani out of the box then sent the ball back to Borra just feet from the half field line as he sent in a long shot to put the finishing touches on a 4-2 victory for the Pios.
 
The Pioneers out shot the Crusaders 10-4 and 8-3 on goal. SHU also dominated corner opportunities, 4-1.

The Pioneers return home next Wednesday, August 28th, as they host Fordham at 6:00 p.m.
