
Short, Villarreal Combine for Pair of Jersey Mike’s MAAC Weekly Awards

FULL MAAC JERSEY MIKE'S WEEKLY AWARDS RELEASE
Fairfield – Conn. – Following a three-match week for the Pioneers on the court, the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team racked up another pair of Jersey Mike's MAAC Weekly Awards on Tuesday with first year outside hitter Ryleigh Short tabbed Rookie of the Week for the third time and sophomore Miliani Villarreal scoring her fifth Libero of the Week accolade.
Short led the Pioneers offensive efforts with a combined 43 attacks across the three matches, putting down double figures in all three matches which extends her current streak to 12-straight matches. For the week, Short hit .202 overall while adding three assists, six service aces and 38 digs, second most on the team. She closed out to of the three matches with a double double both on the road at Marist (17 kills, 14 digs) and at Siena (14 kills, 18 digs).
Sacred Heart's starting libero, Villarreal led the defensive efforts averaging 5.58 digs per set with 67 combined across the three matches. Additionally, she added 29 assists. The highlight of the week for Villarreal came in the five set match at Siena where she racked up 42 digs, extending her previous five-set single match record as she also approaches the single season record for digs in a year.
Short, Villarreal and the Pioneers will return to action with a pair of home MAAC matches this coming weekend as they welcome Canisius and Niagara to the William H. Pitt Center. Opening serve on Friday night against the Golden Griffens is set for 7:00 p.m. while a 6:00 p.m. first serve is set for Saturday evening against the Purple Eagles.
