Fairfield, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's fencing team finished with a 2-3 overall record at its annual SHU Traditions meet held at the William H. Pitt Center on Saturday. The Pioneers two wins came over LIU and NJIT with a 20-7 decision against the Sharks and a 14-13 victory over the Highlanders.
In its first win of the day against LIU, Sacred Heart saw its biggest success come in the foil and saber where they finished with 8-1 decisions in those disciplines. In foil a pair of Pioneers led the way with 3-0 sweeps from Alexander Ligos and Chaissen Costello. Another two Pios picked up three points each in epee with Damian Nguyen and Stephen Scapicchio each earning 3-0 sweeps.
Foil was once again one of the leading disciplines against the Highlanders, this time around with saber joining in the lead as both finished with 6-3 decisions against NJIT. In saber it was Tolga Aslan leading the way with three victories, while Ligos would once again go 3-0 in foil to lead the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart would also face NYU, Princton and Yale in the full-day event. SHU came up just short against NYU, with a 15-12 final bout score. Saber would lead the way against the Bobcat's with Oliver Lindholm taking all three of his bouts to push towards a 6-3 SHY victory in the discipline. Aslan would also post another 3-0 sweep in saber, that coming in the Pioneers match against Yale which opened up the day's action.
The men's fencing team will enjoy a break before returning to action on January 17 when they travel to Pennsylvania for the UPenn Invitational.
