Pioneers Complete Record-Breaking Day at MAAC Championships

Sophia Velleco and Melanie Sanchez each secure a school record
GENEVA, Ohio – The Sacred Heart University women's swim and dive team continued their record-breaking streak on day three of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship remaining in fourth place.
Melanie Sanchez got things started for SHU in the 100-butterfly breaking the school record and placing seventh. Meghan Hammarlund and Emma Haas secured 10th and 16th, respectively. Hammarlund's time of 57.17 puts her fourth all time at SHU.
Sanchez took a quick rest and hopped back in the pool for the 400 IM, securing 14th place and is now second all-time at SHU with her preliminary time of 4:33.22.
Sophia Velleco broke yet another record in the 200 freestyle and placed second in a time of 1:49.81.
In the 100 breaststroke, Rosemery Nieto secured eighth place in a time of 1:04.70.
Kristen Baker paced the Pios in the 100 backstroke in a time of 56.99 placing seventh and is now second all time. Hammarlund finished 16th in the backstroke in a time of 58.57.
The 400-medley relay of Kristen Baker, Rosemery Nieto, Emma Haas and Sophia Velleco placed seventh with a time of 3:51.04.
The Pioneers return tomorrow for the final day of the MAAC Championship meet with prelims at 10 a.m.
