Yadao Named Diving Rookie and Most Outstanding Diver at MAAC Championship as Pios Finish Fourth

Sophia Velleco collects third individual school record
GENEVA, Ohio – The Sacred Heart University women's swim and dive team finished fourth in its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, which concluded on Saturday night.
With her first-place finish in the 1M dive tonight and her 3M win Thursday, Sinclair Yadao was named the MAAC Most Outstanding Diver and Diving Rookie of the Meet.
With all four of SHU's Divers making the 'A' Final in both the 3M and 1M, diving coach Adam Vance was named MAAC Diving Coach of the Year for the first time. This is Vance's fourth consecutive conference coaching recognition.
On the swimming side, Charlotte Kaduson kicked off the finals session in the 1,650 freestyle placing 10th in 17:30.81.
Meghan Hammarlund led the 200 backstroke 'B' relay finishing ninth overall and second all-time at SHU in a time of 2:03.95. Kaitlyn Schwartz also made her way into the SHU all-time charts at fifth in a time of 2:06.98.
Rosemery Nieto crushed her previous 200 breaststroke record set last year in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship meet with a time of 2:19.01 this year to place seventh.
Sophia Velleco secured her third school record of the meet in the 200 butterfly with a second place, finishing time of 2:02.69. The sophomore broke a 14-year standing record set by Katie Marshall in 2011.
Melanie Sanchez also competed in the 200-butterfly finishing fifth and secured third all-time at SHU in a time of 2:04.83. Abby Hernandez improved her prelim time and placed 11th in 2:06.73.
Yadao was crowned champion yet again in the 1M dive with a score of 255.15. Right behind her was Lola Barrett in second with a score of 240.35. Phifey Boyers and Kara Leahy placed fifth and seventh, respectively.
Ending the four-day meet on a high note, the 400-freestyle relay of Emma Davis, Velleco, Sanchez and Hammarlund broke the six-year-old SHU school record in a time 3:30.55.
