Joughin scored for the second straight game
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team fell at home to Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon by a 2-1 final score. Marcus Joughin scored the goal for the Pioneers, his second in as many games.
Records:
SHU: 14-11-3, 10-7-3 AHA
Mercyhurst: 4-22-2, 4-14-2 AHA
How It Happened
Like last night, today's game started off with the Pioneers dominating the action but taking a little bit to find a goal. However, unlike last night, SHU broke through in the first with a goal at 16:19. Joughin broke the scoreless draw, burying a trailing pass from Ray Fust.
SHU again controlled the action in the second, owning an 11-4 lead in shots. Despite this aggression, neither team scored, as the Pios maintained a 1-0 lead going into the third.
The start of the third favored the Lakers heavily, as SHU had a goal called off for offside and Mercyhurst scored a tying goal. The Lakers tied it at 1-1 at 4:50 on a stellar effort by Alexander Dimitriadis.
Mercyhurst scored again at 11:24 to build a 2-1 lead, capitalizing on a breakaway.
The Pioneers had chances to tie the score, putting seven shots on frame in the third. Unfortunately, SHU did not find the tying goal, as the Lakers secured the upset victory.
Notes
SHU next makes a trip to conference-leading Bentley for a weekend series on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 13-14, in Waltham, Mass.
