AHA CHECK IN
After a handful of games on Tuesday, we have a better picture of the league standings heading into the weekend. The Pioneers are tied for fourth in the conference with Robert Morris with 33 points. SHU does hold the tiebreaker over RMU by virtue of beating the Colonials twice this season. Bentley leads the AHA with 47 points, while RIT is second with 42 points. Holy Cross is third with 36 points. Air Force is tied for sixth with 30 points, while Army (23), Niagara (21) and Mercyhurst (14) round out the standings.
SCORING FROM ALL OVER
In Friday's win over Mercyhurst, the Pioneers received scoring production from all over the ice. All three of the Pios' goals in the second period came from defensemen, with Aiden VanRooyan scoring twice, which included the eventual game-winner. VanRooyan's two-goal game is the first in the sophomore's career with Sacred Heart. Noah Ellis scored SHU's third goal in the frame, while Mikey Adamson (2x) and Michael Rubin each had assists, capping a strong scoring output from Pioneer blueliners.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pioneers split a home series against Mercyhurst this past weekend. SHU took the first game 5-1, getting goals from four different players. VanRooyan scored the first two goals, while Ellis scored the third in a high-scoring second period. Marcus Joughin and Gavin Bryant both scored in the third period to ice the win for the Pios. Teagan Kendrick needed just 10 saves to secure the eighth win of the season.
The Lakers got the better of Sacred Heart in the finale, 2-1. SHU struck first late in the first period on Joughin's second goal of the weekend, but a second goal eluded them for the remainder of the game. The Pios did score again early in the third, but it eventually was waved off due to an offside. Mercyhurst capitalized, finding the equalizer 4:50 into the third before eventually taking the lead at 11:24.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
The Falcons still sit at the top of the AHA standings heading into this weekend, as Bentley is 14-3-4 with 47 league points. The Falcons added points in four of five conference games since meeting the Pioneers in mid-January. The team is coming off a 4-3 overtime win over Army on Tuesday evening.
Bentley continues to lead the conference in both scoring offense (3.10 gpg) and scoring defense (2.38 gpg). The Falcons also boast a league-leading power-play unit, as they rank 22nd nationally with a 21.8% power play percentage. With this strong play, Bentley received 14 votes in the latest DCU/USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll.
A leading cause of the Falcons' success this season has been the excellent play they have gotten out of their two goaltenders, Nicholas Bevilacqua and Lukas Swedin. Bevilacqua has better stats in fewer games, as he is 8-1-1 with the country's highest save percentage (.939) and second-best goals-against average (1.59). Swedin leads the Falcons in minutes with 975:43 and is 8-4-4 with a .919 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average. On offense, senior forward Jake Black paces the team with 15 goals and 31 points.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Friday's contest will mark the 95th all-time meeting between the Pioneers and Falcons, as SHU leads the all-time series, 45-41-8. The Pioneers took four points in January's league weekend between the teams at the Martire Family Arena.
UP NEXT
Sacred Heart welcomes Holy Cross on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 20-21, for the team's finale home series of the 2025-26 regular season. Saturday's game will serve as the Pioneers' senior day, as the team will honor its nine seniors and one graduate student.
