How it Happened:
It was a physical battle from start to finish on Monday night as the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team hosted the Stony Brook University Seawolves. The Pioneers held Stony Brook to a 1-1 draw after taking the lead early in the game. The Seawolves tied the game just before halftime, with neither side finding the back of the net in the second half.
Sacred Heart came out firing early, taking advantage just over two minutes into the match. Alejandro Almuzara put the Pios on the board off a pass from Brady Poor, giving SHU the early 1-0 advantage.
The Pioneers continued to create multiple scoring opportunities throughout the opening half, with Daniel Pineda forcing a save from the Stony Brook goalkeeper Heidar Hermannsson in the 27th minute. Stony Brook answered with pressure of their own, including a shot from Ryan Farr that ricocheted off the side post.
The Seawolves eventually found the equalizer with just 23 seconds remaining in the first half, as Alex Fleury scored in the final minute to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Stony Brook controlled much of the possession and pressure to open the second half, registering 12 shots and seven corner kicks after halftime. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Anthony Suarez came up with three saves in the second half to keep the Seawolves off the scoreboard.
The Pioneers' challenge grew in the 70th minute when Ivan Morcillo was shown a red card, forcing Sacred Heart to play the remainder of the match a player down. Despite the disadvantage, SHU continued to battle defensively and held Stony Brook without a goal over the final 20 minutes.
Sacred Heart still generated chances of its own late, including shots from Pineda and Danny Istambouli, but Hermannsson kept the Pioneers from reclaiming the lead.
Suarez finished the night with four saves, while Pineda led Sacred Heart with three shots, two on goal.
