
Pioneers Split on Opening Day of Black Knight Invitational, Sweep Albany to End the Day

West Point, N.Y. – In its first matches of the regular season, the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team split its opening day action at the Black Knight Invitational, falling to the host Black Knights in the day's first match before sweeping the UAlbany Great Danes in the nightcap.
Leading the Pioneers on the day was senior right-side Lauren Hubert who combined for 36 kills and 20 digs, including securing the first double double of the season for SHU with 19 kills and 11 digs in the sweep of UAlbany. Also among the leaders for the Pioneers was senior outside Abbie Hagedorn who joined Hubert leading the way in the opener with 15 kills, while rookie Sofia Hechavarria joined in leading the way in the victory with 11 kills, her first match hitting double digits.

Versus Army:
Sacred Heart opened up the match with a first set victory behind a set-high six kills that on a .400 attack percentage from sophomore outside Hagedorn. The Black Knights would rebound to take the next three sets, stepping up its serve and blocking game to secure the victory.
Overall, for the match, the Pioneers were led by senior right-side Hubert who racked up 17 kills, one of two Pioneers to finish in double figures with Hagedorn following her with 15 kills. Of the pair, Hubert led the duo with a .286 attack percentage, securing her 17 kills on 42 swings with five errors. In addition, Hubert added three assists, nine digs and a block.
Sophomore transfer setter Franz finished her first match wearing the red and white with 29 assists, while adding a team-high three service aces and seven digs. Defensively, junior libero Villarreal led the way with 16 digs and followed Franz with a pair of aces.
Versus UAlbany:
Just like they did in the opening match of the day, the Pioneers opened up their second match with a first set victory with a commanding 25-16 decision. This time around, SHU would keep that momentum, holding the Great Danes to just a .080 attack percentage for the match as they Pioneers completed the sweep of the America East opponent.
For the second time on the day, leading the way for the Pioneers was Hubert who finished with 19 kills and combined that with 11 digs for the first double double of the season for the Pios. This time around, the senior hitter was joined by rookie Hechavarria in leading the squad as the outside hitter completed her first collegiate double figure outing with 11 kills while adding three blocks.
Franz closed out the match with 37 assists while leading the Pioneers to .280 attack percentage as a team, which included a .412 effort from Hubert which led the way individually. Villarreal continued her defense strength, finishing the three-set match with 19 digs, joined by Hubert as the only other Pio in double figures.

Sacred Heart closes out the two-day Black Knight Invitational with one more match on Sunday, August 30 as the Pioneers will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes with an early morning first serve set for 11:00 a.m. at Gillis Field House.
