NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University field hockey team dropped its home opener, 4-1, to Providence on Friday morning at Johnson Field.

Of Note:
Providence jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, converting on a pair of penalty corners to take a two-goal advantage into the second quarter.

The Friars added another goal off a penalty corner in the second quarter, extending their lead to 3-0 at halftime.

Sacred Heart held Providence scoreless for the majority of the third quarter, but the Friars converted on another penalty corner late in the frame to take a 4-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Sacred Heart found the back of the net late in the fourth quarter when Erin Lynch inserted a penalty corner to Celia Benson, who set up Blaire Sparks for her first goal of the season.

Emma Rose-Phillips had a one-on-one opportunity late in the fourth, but the Providence goalkeeper made a big stop to keep the score at 4-1, which would hold as the final.

Senior goalkeeper Brianna Cooper made three saves in the setback.
