Pios Split Final Action of Sacred Heart Invitational, Defeat CCSU in Four

Fairfield, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team wrapped up its second day of action hosting the Sacred Heart Invitational, splitting a pair of matches on the day, falling to Binghamton in five sets before bouncing back to defeat in-state rival Central Connecticut in four. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 3-3 on the season.
Leading the way on the day was sophomore outside hitter Abbie Hagedorn who combined for 34 kills across the two matches, putting up team-highs of 16 and 18 respectively against the Bearcats and Blue Devils. Additionally, she added 27 digs, combining for a double double in both matches, and dropped in an impressive 10 aces.
For her efforts, Hagedorn, along with junior Miliani Villarreal were named to the All-Tournament team. Joining the pair were Viktoria Dimitrova, Celeste Ocampo and Regan Kadel from Binghamton, Cullen Winter and Olivia Keckler from Central Connecticut and Nina Salas from Le Moyne.

Match One vs Binghamton
After dropping the opening set 25-20, the Pioneers rebounded to open up set two to a 9-1 lead before evening out the match score with a 25-15 set two victory. The Bearcats responded to take set three 25-17 before a close battle ensued in the fourth set with SHU hanging on down the stretch to force a deciding frame. The fifth set featured six ties and four lead changes before the Bearcats began to pull away late and earned the match victory with a 15-10 decision.
Hagedorn opened up her day's action with her first of two double doubles with identical numbers of 16 kills and 16 digs while adding seven service aces. Overall, she was one of four Pios in double figures, joined by Hubert with 13 and Hechavarria and Raissa Antonio who each finished with 10. Of all the leading hitters, Antonio led the way with a .318 attack percentage, collecting her 10 kills on 22 attempts with three errors.
Franz finished the opening match with 38 assists and also completed a double double with 13 digs, while Villarreal closed out the match with a team-high 24 digs.
Match Two vs Central Connecticut
Despite six ties and four lead changes early in the opening set, the Pioneers broke things open taking the first set 25-14 and the second 25-12. After switching sides, the Blue Devils used the momentum of the long intermission to pull out to an early lead and was able to hold on even after being forced to win by two, scoring a 27-25 win in set three. Sacred Heart would regroup however, taking the set and the match with a 25-17 decision in set four.
Hagedorn completed her second double double of the day with a season-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs while hitting .359 for the match with her 18 hammers coming on 39 attempts with four errors. Additionally, she added three aces and a solo block.
Hubert and Hechavarria finished behind her on offense with nine and seven kills, respectively. Hubert finished just shy of the double double as she added 12 digs while also adding eight points on three aces and five block assists. Antonio matched her team-high five blocks, while Villarreal once again led the Pios defensive efforts with 19 digs while adding a pair of aces.
Up Next:
The next time the Pioneers take the court it will come following a cross-country flight as they head to Riverside, Calif. for three matches in three days at the Cal Baptist Invitational. The tournament will begin on Tuesday as SHU meets Idaho before taking on North Dakota Friday and the host Cal Baptist on Saturday.
