ORLANDO, FL - It wasn't quite what the Pioneers had hoped for on opening day 2003. The Sacred Heart bats showed signs of life in a tough 5-3 loss to Loyola of Chicago in the opener, and then they went silent in a 6-0 loss to LaSalle in the nightcap.
Caveney gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single that scored senior Pam Vuijst, who had led off the game getting hit by a pitch. They passed up a golden chance to get more runs when they left the bases loaded.
Loyola scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first off SHU starting pitcher Michele Walker. A two-out error extended the inning and scored one run, and Natalie Martin followed with a triple that scored two more.
The Pioneers got back within a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Leslie Konsig that scored Caveney, who had singled with one out. The Pioneers again had the chance to score more, but left the bases loaded.
Loyola would get what would be the winning run in the bottom of the third. Susan Scott led off the inning with a double, went to third on a sacrifice buny and scored on a single by Martin.
Jenny Rice relieved Loyola starter Mia Pangere in the fourth inning when the Pioneers scored another run on a Caveney RBI double. She would pitch the final 3 1/3 without allowing a hit and striking out four.
In the second game, the Pioneer hitters were stymied by Ali Wood. She went the distance and allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
