Emmitsburg, MD - Freshman Jen Place ripped a two-run triple in the fifth inning of game two to help the Sacred Heart University softball team to a 5-1 win and a doubleheader split with Mount St. Mary's softball in a Northeast Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Mount won the opener 4-1.
The Pioneers, 10-25 overall and 5-9 in the NEC, hopped on the board first in game one, as back-to-back singles put runners on first and second with no outs in the second. Erin Caveney, who opened the inning with a single, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by teammate Heather Gutkes and then scored on a fielder's choice to make it a 1-0 game.
In the third inning the Mount erased their zero spot on the board as Shalise Tolentino opened the inning with a single to left field. Chloe Mathus then laid down a beautiful bunt that forced a throwing error, putting Tolentino on third and Mathus at second. Freshman centerfielder Sarah Ramsburg then roped a single into right field to bring in Kathleen Housman, who entered the game to pinch run for Tolentino at third base, and put runners at the corners. On the next pitch, Ramsburg stole second base as Mathus beat the throw from second base back to the plate and scored the Mount's second run as the Mount took a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Mount added some insurance for starting pitcher Maria Lutz, who pitched a complete game, giving up four hits, one run and striking out two. With two outs the Mount strung together four-straight singles as Val Petillo, Tolentino, Mathus and Ramsburg all singled in a row to increase the Mount's advantage to 4-1. With a three-run cushion, Lutz sat down the Pioneers in order in the top of the seventh to capture her sixth win of the year.
In game two it was the Pioneers striking first again, scoring one in the top of the third as Katie Bowen snuck under a tag from Mount catcher Danyale Goode to take a 1-0 lead. The Mount tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Goode cranked a shot off the wall in left field for a double. Jen Sansevero then complemented Goode's double with a two bagger of her own, lining a shot down the left field line to bring Goode to the plate and notch the game at one.
In the top of the fifth the Mount found themselves in trouble as the Pioneer bats woke up, knocking four runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead. After walking Bowen, Mount starting pitcher Alison Moraca gave up a single to Gutkes to put two on for Place, who tripled down the right field line to bring Bowen and Gutkes to the plate. Place later scored on a single by Leslie Konsig and then Konsig scored on a double by Michele Walker as the Pioneers forged ahead and took the four run victory.
