FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman pitcher Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) tossed a four-hit shutout, while senior Erin Caveney (Spofford, NH) drove home the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sacred Heart University softball team a 1-0 win in the opening game of a doubleheader with Iona College on Thursday. Iona came back to win the second contest on a five-hit shutout by senior Amy Burdette (Frederick, MD).
DeMott and Iona pitcher Alison Higgs (Hagerstown, MD) traded zeros on the scoreboard for six innings. Junior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double for the Pioneers. She was sacrificed to third, and Caveney followed with a sharp single between short and third to drive home the winning run.
DeMott would strikeout five batters without issuing a walk in her seven innings to improve to 2-6 on the season. Higgs also allowed just four hits, while striking out eight and walking one.
Iona, now 8-19, broke their scoreless string in the first inning of game two off SHU starter Michele Walker (Paramus, NJ). Higgs led off the game with a double to right center. She had to leave the game due to a foot injury and Suzan O'Shea pinch ran. She was sacrificed to third, and two batters later was driven home with a single by Kate Giella (Hawthorne, NJ).
The Gaels got an RBI single from Liz Hammel (Frederick, MD) in the fifth and scored another in the inning thanks to a Pioneer error. They upped the lead to 5-0 with two more in the sixth, using two more SHU errors. Burdette had an RBI double in the seventh to close the scoring.
Burdette danced on the edge on the mound most of the game, allowing five hits and four walks, hitting a pair of batters and throwing two wild pitches. Her defense was solid behind her, however, and the Pioneers left ten runners on base.
