
Softball Opens 2003-04 Season 3-1 at Rebel Games

ORLANDO, FL - The Sacred Heart University softball team opened the 2003-04 season by winning three of their first four contests at the Rebel Games in Orlando, FL. The team won both games there first day and then split their two games the next day.
The Pioneers opened with a 10-5 win over Holy Cross, including a five-run fifth inning that put SHU ahead for good at 6-1 on March 7th. Senior Katie Ross went 2-2 on the day, scoring three runs, while freshman Caitlin Carroll (Los Alamitos, CA) went 3-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman Bethany Lemenager (New Bedford, MA) pitched seven innings, allowing just one earner run and striking out five Crusader batters.
In Sacred Heart's second game of the day the team defeated Indiana-Perdue Fort Wayne 6-5 in 11 innings. After the two teams exchanged runs in the 10th inning and in the bottom of the 11th junior Becky Cameron (Girard, OH) singled to drive in sophomore Jen Place (Latham, NY) for the game-winning run. Freshman Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) pitched ten innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out ten batters, before giving way to sophomore Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) in the top of the 11th. DeMott pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout and picked up her first win of the season.
The Pioneers opened the second day of their spring break trip with a 6-2 loss to Lehigh, who improved to 10-2-1 on the season. It was a 3-2 game when the Hawks put the game away with a three-run sixth inning on two SHU errors and a wild pitch.
Sacred Heart Bounced back in the second game of the day as they held off Butler for a 6-5 win and improved to 3-1 on the young season. The Pioneers trailed 4-1 entering the top half of the fifth inning when the team exploded for four runs, capped off by a two RBI double by Carroll, to take a 5-4 lead. The team scored one run each in the seventh inning for the 6-5 final. SHU used three pitchers in the game with Lemenager pitching in the final inning to pick up her second win of the season.
Sacred Heart has six games remaining in Florida before traveling to Virginia for the James Madison Tournament.
