HARRISONBURG, VA - Junior Katie Jaworski set a James Madison University school record with five RBI, including a three-run homer in the first inning, to lead the Dukes to an 8-2 win over Sacred Heart University and send the host team into the championship game of the JMU Invitational on Sunday.
Sacred Heart, 3-11, took advantage of two JMU errors in the first inning to score a pair of runs. Shannon Bailey led off the game with a single and Katie Ross followed by reaching first on a JMU error. Jen Place then put down a perfect bunt and beat it out for a single that loaded the bases. Leslie Konsig hit a come-backer to the pitcher that forced Bailey at home. Two runs scored when a ball was booted by the JMU shortstop on a ball hit by Tiffanie Cross-Monzo.
SHU starter Bethany Lemenager got the first two Duke hitters in the bottom of the first, but then gave up a single and hit a batter. Jaworski made her pay when she laced a ball over the center field fence to give JMU a 3-2 lead.
The Dukes got two more in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Jaworski. They would score three more in the fifth on an RBI single by Natalie Burd and a sacrifice fly by Megan Smith.
The Pioneers, losers of ten straight, will face either Lehigh University or Binghamton University in the consolation game of the tournament on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
