FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University softball team took game two of the doubleheader against Robert Morris University 5-4 to gain a split on the day after dropping game one 7-0 to the Colonials. The Pioneers scored all of their runs in that second game in the first inning, which was highlighted by a two-run homer from freshman Caitlin Carroll (Los Alamitos, CA).
In the first game the Colonials (9-29-1, 6-6-1 NEC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Keri Meyer and an RBI single from Kali Byers. Robert Morris tacked on five more runs over the next six innings, one earned and four unearned, for the 7-0 final. Byers and Amy Aloi were both 3-for-4 in the game.
Danielle Cohen pitched the complete game shutout, with eight strikeouts, in picking up her seventh win of the season. Sophomore Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) surrendered four runs, two earned, in six innings for the Pioneers and also had eight strikeouts in taking the loss.
Sacred Heart (11-27-1, 7-11 NEC) came out swinging to start game-two as the Pioneers put up five runs in the first inning. Senior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) had an RBI double, scoring fellow senior Shannon Bailey (Carmel, NY), and then scored on Carroll's two-run homer. Senior Deanna Emery (Gorham, ME) capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI single that drove in sophomore Heather Gutkes (Newport, RI) and freshman Erin Silk (Manalapan, NJ).
The Colonials rallied in the fifth inning to cut the SHU lead to 5-4. After back-to-back singles from Jill Spago and Ashley Wood Meyer hit a three-run homerun to right field. Freshman Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) settled down after that, allowing just one hit to the final ten batters.
Mellin went the distance to record her fourth win of the season with three strikeouts and without walking a single batter. Erica Riggle was only able to record two outs before getting chased in the first inning, after allowing five earned runs, and took the loss for Robert Morris.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against St. Francis (PA), with the first game scheduled to get under way at 12:00 pm from Pioneers Park on Senior Day.
