CAMBRIDGE, MA - Freshman Chauncey Hardy (Middletown, CT) had a career-high 21 points, while junior Brice Brooks (Silverdale, WA) had 14 points and a game-high six rebounds, to help the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to a 95-75 win over Harvard University in a non-conference game Wednesday night.
Hardy, making his first collegiate start, hit a couple of early three-pointers to help the Pioneers open a 14-7 lead. Hardy finished the half with 11 points. Sacred Heart forced the play throughout the half, forcing Harvard to go deeper into its bench than normal.
Head coach Dave Bike continued to rotate his players to keep them fresh and junior Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT) gave the Pioneers a spark off the bench with a pair of three's down the stretch as his team pulled away from the fatigued Crimson.
The Pioneers forced Harvard into 15 first-half turnovers, and converted those into 17 points and a 50-33 lead at the intermission. Sacred Heart held the Crimson to just 38 percent (11-29) shooting in the period, while the Pioneers hit at a 58 percent clip (21-36).
Hardy started the second half the way he ended the first and helped the Pioneers extend the advantage to 21 points in the first three minutes. The Crimson cut it to 15 on a bucket by Jim Goffredo with 12:30 to play but buckets by Granato and freshman Ryan Litke (Windsor, CT) helped the Pioneers build it back to 21. A steal and dunk by Gene Pettway (Bridgeport, CT) with 7:40 left gave the Pioneers their biggest lead at 80-55.
The win was the first on the road for the Pioneers this season and evened their season record at 6-6. It was the fifth time this season that Sacred Heart had scored at least 90 points in a game.
Harvard, 7-5, was led by Goffredo with 19 points. Junior Evan Harris had 15 while senior Brian Cusworth added 13.
The Pioneers will be off until December 31 when they play at Army at noon.
