FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior forward Joey Henley (Kent, WA) had 18 points and game-high nine rebounds, while freshman guard Chauncey Hardy (Middletown, CT) also finished with 18 points to lead the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to a 90-74 win over visiting Robert Morris University in a Northeast Conference game Thursday night. The Colonials came in as one of the co-favorites to win the conference this year with Monmouth, and ranked 14th in the most recent College Insider Mid-Major poll.
Sacred Heart, 4-5 overall and 1-0 in conference, led 51-34 thanks to 16 first-half points by Hardy and 52 percent shooting from the field (18-34). Hardy was nearly perfect in the first half, hitting 6-7 from the field and all four of his three-point attempts.
The Pioneers got a three from junior Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT) on the first possession of the second half to go up by twenty. They opened up their biggest lead of the game with 9:15 left at 73-51 after a foul line jumper from junior Brice Brooks (Silverdale, WA).
The second half belonged to Henley. The junior, who missed all of last season with an injury, had 11 of his points in the second and was a dominating force inside.
Robert Morris, 5-2 overall and 0-1, was led by senior AJ Jackson with 18 points. Junior guard Tony Lee added 17, while sophomore Jeremy Chappell finished with 16. The Colonials shot just two of 22 from three-point range.
"We talked before the game about Robert Morris coming in here with a lot of respect from a lot of people," said SHU head coach Dave Bike. "Respect is something we want, but I told them Robert Morris wasn't going to give it to us, we'd have to try and take it from them. I think we might have earned a little respect tonight."
Senior Jarrid Frye (Queens, NY) finished with 12 points for the Pioneers. Brooks, playing in his first game of the season, finished with nine points.
The Pioneers have now scored 90 points in each of its first three home games, registering a 3-0 mark in that span.
