Final Stats
Milford, CT -
Rensselaer scored two goals in the first period and freshman Emily Ford made 16 saves as the RPI Engineers held on to beat Sacred Heart 2-0 in women's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
RPI outshot Sacred Heart 49-16 in the game. Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) was the star of the game for Sacred Heart, making 47 saves to keep the Pioneers within striking distance.
After a fairly even opening to the game, RPI got on the board 11:02 into the first. Boulay made a save on Engineer freshman Jaime Jacquard-Sowa, but the rebound was corralled by junior Sarah Daniel. Daniel fed the puck to freshman Emily Donowick in the slot and Donowick flipped a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
RPI went up 2-0 on a shorthanded goal by freshman Melanie Guillemette with 4:35 left in the opening period. Guillemette, trying to clear the puck on the penalty kill, fired it down ice from the red line. Boulay tried to scoop the puck up, but it bounced underneath her glove and into the net giving Guillemette her sixth tally of the year.
Sacred Heart had some chances, but couldn't convert on their opportunities, going 0-6 on the power play. The Engineers finished the game 0-5 with the extra skater.
The Pioneers and Engineers will meet again Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Pioneers will honor their four graduating seniors with a special ceremony before the game.
