New Haven, CT - Sophomore Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) recorded her second straight hat trick and junior Leah Stoehr (Hummelstown, PA) tacked on three assists as Sacred Heart rallied for a 5-3 win over Virginia Commonwealth in field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Yale's Johnson Field.
The Rams jumped on top early on when freshman Rebecca Sullivan scored 2:04 into the game. Sullivan took a pass from Amanda Reames and fired a shot past Pioneer goaltender Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH).
Eye got the Pioneers even at the 10:17 mark of the first half when she scored off a pass from junior Katie Bohren (Hopewell Junction, NY). However, the Rams Nikki Lloyd put VCU back on top 3:32 later when she broke away from the Pioneer defense and scored her third goal of the year.
Freshman Emilie Osinga put the Rams on top halfway threw the opening stanza. Lloyd fed Osinga a perfect pass in the middle of the scoring circle and she shot it into the back of the cage for the goal.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 3-2 when senior Sarah Yeaton (Hampton, NH) converted a penalty corner attempt at the 21:21 mark. Stoehr put the ball in play and junior Danielle Vasely (Poughkeepsie, NY) set Yeaton up for her first goal of the season.
Eye would tie the game for the second time with her second goal of the game with 3:32 left in the first half. After her initial shot was stopped by Rams goaltender Brittany LoVullo, Eye was there to get the rebound and put the ball in the net to even the game at halftime.
Senior Colleen Carney scored what proved to be the game winning goal 2:04 into the second half. Carney took a pass from Stoehr at the top of the circle and moved in and whacked the ball past LoVullo for the goal.
Eye completed the hat trick with 27:03 left in the game following a pass from Stoehr. Eye, who also had three goals in Saturday's Pioneer win over Vermont, now has eight goals in four games this season, just two shy of her total for the entire 2005 season.
Sophomore Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) stopped three shots in the second half to earn her first career victory in net for the Pioneers. Del Greco made two saves in her half of work.
Sacred Heart out shot VCU 17-12. LoVullo made six saves before being replaced by sophomore Laura Baker.
The Pioneers (3-1) are back in action Saturday afternoon when they visit UConn. Game time in Storrs is 12:00 pm.
