Vogt and Pompeo net goals for the Pioneers
LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Sacred Heart University field hockey team opened the 2026 season on Saturday with a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime defeat to Ball State in nonconference action at Bucknell's Holmes Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa.
Hailey Vogt and Joey Pompeo were the goal scorers for the Pioneers, with Pompeo's being the first of her collegiate career.

Of Note:
The defenses controlled the start of today's game, as both teams were scoreless through the opening 15 minutes.
SHU wasted no time in the second quarter, taking a 1-0 lead 3:25 into the frame. Vogt capitalized on the team's second penalty corner of the game, scoring on a pass from Holly DeAngelo for the first goal of her junior season.
Unfortunately for the Pios, Ball State answered in under a minute to tie the score at 1-1 and held a 2-1 lead at halftime following a tally at 28:46.
The Pioneers again found a quick goal in a frame, taking just 50 seconds in the third quarter to even the game at 2-2. Pompeo, a first-year midfielder, netted her first collegiate goal as 2025 NFHCA All-Region second-teamer Celia Benson picked up where she left off last season with an assist.
A scoreless fourth quarter meant Sacred Heart was going to play some extra field hockey in its first game of the season. The Pios and Cardinals got a quick introduction to the NCAA's new 11v11 sudden victory overtime format, with Ball State taking a 3-2 win at 67:02. The Cardinals scored on a penalty stroke after a Ball State shot was saved off the goal line but was deemed to be touched by a hand.
Noteworthy:
• Today marked the first all-time meeting between SHU and Ball State.
• SHU went to overtime just once in 2025, a 3-2 (2OT) win over Georgetown.
• Pompeo scored her first collegiate goal.
• Pompeo, Dylan Oszeyczik, Katy Adams, Annie Collier, Lauren King and Rylie Wyckoff all made their collegiate debuts today.
• Vogt, DeAngelo and Benson all began their junior campaigns with a point today.
