Field Hockey Drops NEC Opener to Lock Haven, 5-1

Fairfield, CT - Senior Renee Kemmerer scored two goals to lead Lock Haven past Sacred Heart, 5-1, in NEC field hockey action Sunday at Campus Field. The game was the conference opener for the Pioneers and moved the Eagles to 2-0 in league play.

Lock Haven controlled the game offensively for long stretches. They out-shot SHU 22-14 for the day. Sam Stoyer got the Eagles off to a fast start with a goal in the 9th minute of play. Amy Hordendorf and tallied a goal off a deflection at the 27:26 mark to make it a two goal lead for LHU. Kemmerer made it 3-0 in the 31st minute when she corralled a loose ball and flipped it high into the cage over Pioneer goaltender Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT).

With 3:48 left in the first half, junior Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) got the Pioneers on the board with her sixth goal of the year. Following a SHU penalty corner attempt, Amy Hendricks (Milford, PA) hit Eye with an inlet pass and Eye tipped the ball past Eagles net-minder Ali Harris to make the score 3-1.

Lock Haven scored two goals in a six minute span to put the game away in the second half. Tonia Marie James found the back of the net at the 57:33 mark and was followed up by Kemmerer's second tally of the day with 6:22 left in the game.

The Pioneers are back in action Friday when they visit Monmouth in another NEC contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
