
Women's Volleyball Downs Providence, 3-0

FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek had nine kills, 29 assists and eight digs to help the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team defeat Providence College in the final match of the SHU Invitational Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Pioneers a 2-1 record in the tournament and helped them finish second behind the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore who cruised through the Invitational with a 3-0 mark.
With the win, SHU moved to 4-9 under new coach Rob Machan, already eclipsing the amount of wins the team had all of last season.
All three games against the 9-6 Friars from Providence were close ones. SHU won the opener 30-27 and had to go to overtime in the second game, before winning 32-30.
The Pioneers actually faced losing the game in regulation after an attack error by Kidd-Kadlubek to give Providence a 29-28. She made up for it on the next point, putting away the ball on an assist from Aurora Appel to tie it at 29. Senior Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) gave the Pioneers a 31-30 lead off a set by Appel, and an error by Elizabeth Flynn of Providence on the next point, gave the Pioneers the game.
SHU finished off Providence by winning 30-25 in the third game.
Earlier in the day, the Pioneers lost a 3-1 decision to Maryland-Eastern Shore 3-1. SHU won the first game of the match, 30-28, but the Hawks took control after that. UMES won the next three matches easily, 30-21, 30-17 and 30-21.
Whitney Johnson of UMES was selected as the Invitational MVP. Christina Estebane and Holiday Eller of UMES were named to the All-Tournament Team, Sophomore Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) of SHU was selected after finishing the three matches with 31 kills, five service aces, six digs, and six blocks, while leading the team in attack percentage at .364.
Junior Kendra Sloan (Bristow, VA) of the Pioneers was also selected with 30 kills, four digs, four blocks and she was second on the team with a .273 attack percentage.
Flynn of Providence College and Jadelyn Castillo of St. Francis (NY) rounded out the All-Tournament Team.
During the tournament, freshman Mydori Saipale led SHU with 36 kills Junior Lynne Principio led the team in digs with 38 Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek led SHU with 84 assists... she also had 21 kills and five blocks
