Lauren Fontaine's Hat Trick Nets Pioneers 7-3 Win over Cortland State

Jan. 11, 2008

Final Stats

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (January 11, 2008) - Sacred Heart freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Pioneers to a 7-3 win over visiting Cortland State at the Wonderland of Ice Friday night. Fellow rookie Carla Pentimone (Chicago, IL) and junior Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) each scored goals and picked-up three assists in the winning effort.

Fontaine wasted little time in netting her first of the night, collecting a loose puck in the Cortland end and depositing it top-shelf just 28 seconds into play. The Red Dragons didn't take long to respond as junior Kalee Stover knocked in her own rebound less then a minute later for a 1-1 tie. Pentimone put SHU in front 2-1 in third minute of the period, placing her shot perfectly in the top-right corner.

Neither team could muster a solid scoring chance the rest of the period, giving way to the Pioneer offensive flurry that followed in the second stanza. SHU out shot Cortland 20-10 in the second period and found the back of the net five times.

A quick Cortland goal just 14 seconds in briefly tied the score at 2-2 but the Pioneers answered right back, notching a power play goal at the 2:11 mark. Freshman Taryn Lapierre (Burrillville, RI) beat Melissa Stern to give SHU the lead for good with assists credited to sophomore Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) and senior Devon Gaslin (Augusta, ME) on the play.

Freshman Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) made it 4-2 just over a minute later and Fontaine added her second of the night at 6:18 to make it 5-2. The Red Dragons stopped the run off the ensuing face-off as freshman Shannon Hakes beat SHU goalie Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) but the Pioneers answered right back again. Dziama tickled the twine at 6:54 for a 6-3 advantage.

Fontaine closed out the scoring less then two minutes into the third period, scoring from Dziama and Pentimone to complete the hat-trick. The Pioneers finished the night one-for-seven on the power play and out shot the Red Dragons 40-21. SHU did an excellent job playing a man-down, twice killing off 5-on-3 power play opportunities.

Perry made 18 saves in picking up the win for SHU who will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon hosting Nichols College at 3:00 pm.
