Jan. 8, 2008

Final Stats

Bridgeport, CT - Junior Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) and freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) each had a goal and an assist to lead Sacred Heart to a 3-2 win over Southern Maine in women's ice hockey action Tuesday at the Wonderland of Ice.

Sacred Heart controlled much of the offensive play, out-shooting the Huskies 39-20. However, Southern Maine jumped on top first, scoring late in the first period. With 47 seconds left, Lindsay Herzog carried the puck into the offensive zone and dished it off to Kelley Connors. Connors moved in on goal and slid the puck around Pioneer goaltender Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) to give the Huskies the lead.

Junior Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) tied the game for Sacred Heart at the 9:30 mark of the second period. Freshman Taryn Lapierre (Burillville, RI) carried the puck into the offensive zone and slid the puck through the goalmouth to Rideout who redirected the puck into the net to tie the game.

Dziama gave the Pioneers the lead with a powerplay goal at the 12:09 mark of the second period. Fontaine fed Dziama a pass and she snapped a shot that beat Southern Maine goaltender Emily Barrett. Fontaine and Dziama hooked up again 4:27 into the third period to make it 3-1. Dziama hit Fontaine with a pass and the rookie wound up and blasted a shot into the back of the net for her team leading 11th goal of the year.

Amanda Shorey scored for Southern Maine with 8:54 left in the third period to make it 3-2. However, the Huskies would get no closer as Perry made 18 saves in the game to earn the victory.

Sacred Heart and Southern Maine close out their series Wednesday at the Wonderland of Ice. Face-off is set for 12:00 pm.
