Bridget Katz scored five goals and Savannah Varner added two tallies of her own to lead Robert Morris College to a 9-3 win over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Saturday at the Wonderland of Ice.
The Eagles controlled play from the start, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Katz got things started 47 seconds into the game with an unassisted tally. Jennifer Delheimer and Danielle McCutcheon followed with unassisted goals of their own at the 1:17 and 3:16 marks, respectively.
Sopomore Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) scored off a face-off win by freshman Taryn Lapierre (Burillville, RI) at the 4:36 mark to get the Pioneers on the board. However, Katz came back with two more goals over the next two minutes to make it 5-1 Eagles after one period.
Junior Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) cut SHU's deficit to 5-2 5:43 into the second period, assisted by Lapierre. Varner scored her first goal at the 8:39 mark but she was answered by a SHU goal from Whitney Dziama (Walpole. MA) with 9:35 left in the period. Varner scored her second goal with 10 seconds left in the stanza to give the Eagles a four goal lead.
Katz scored two more goals in the third period to finish off her big day. Despite the score, the Pioneers actually outshot the Eagles 40-36. Ashley Miller made 33 saves to earn the victory.
Sacred Heart will host Rhode Island in a two game series next weekend. The teams will meet at the Wonderland of Ice on Friday night at 7:00 pm with Senior Day festivities on Saturday starting at 2:00 pm.
