Pioneers .1 Seconds Short of Win in 4-4 Tie with Southern Maine

The Pioneer women's hockey team skated to a 4-4 draw with Southern Maine as the Huskies scored the game tying goal with just .1 seconds on the clock. Lauren Towers (West Hartford, CT) scored her first career goal to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 early. Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) converted on a penalty shot to give Sacred Heart a one goal lead with 3:00 minutes to play. The Huskies battled back and used an extra attacker in the final moments as Kylie Blasen saved the day for Southern Maine with the buzzer beating goal.

Sacred Heart (6-10-2) relinquished its 1-0 lead midway through the first period as Jessica Knight notched a power play marker for the Huskies. Southern Maine (7-4-1) pulled ahead in the second period on another power play tally, this time scored by Blasen. Southern Maine earned the power play after goaltender Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, MN) was called for roughing. The Pioneers tied the game two minutes later with Gina Arnone's (Bridgewater, NJ) fourth goal of the series as SHU capitalized on a power play opportunity of their own.

Special teams continued to be the trend of the second period as the Huskies regained the lead on a short-handed goal scored by Kate Paradis. Eight minutes into the third stanza Sacred Heart knotted the score at three as captain Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) found the net with an assist from Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN). With just three minutes to play Fontaine earned a penalty shot after Jana Sacco was called for hooking. The sophomore center scored her eighth goal of the season and gave the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.

The Huskies were finally able to pull their goaltender with only 20 seconds to play and it proved to be just enough time. Blasen converted on the dramatic goal last second goal with a pass from Regina Wilson to send the game to overtime at 4-4. Sacred Heart outshot Southern Maine 2-1 in overtime and 34-29 overall but could not find the game winner.

The Pioneers leave Gorham, Maine 1-0-1 and move to 6-10-2 on the season. Sacred Heart will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Aston, PA for a weekend series with Neumann. Game time is set for 7:00 pm both Friday and Saturday.
