The Sacred Heart women's hockey team dropped the opening game of a weekend series with the Colonials, 7-2 on Friday night. Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) scored a goal and added an assist as the Pioneers were only able to fire 20 shots on goal. Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) notched her third tally of the season in the loss.
Robert Morris (10-15-2, 4-5-1 CHA) struck first on a Chelsea Walkland marker 4:42 into the contest and Brianna Delaney put the Colonials up two midway through the first frame. Gottwald cut the SHU deficit in half lighting the lamp on the power play with an assist from Rideout. Sacred Heart was outshot 18-6 in the first stanza but only trailed 2-1 at the first intermission.
Sacred Heart (12-12-2) was able to balance the action in the second frame but the Colonials scored the period's only goal on a Megan Picinic power play tally. Robert Morris struck the Pioneers in the heart with a short-handed goal to open the scoring in the third period.
Sacred Heart fell behind 4-1 after the Colonials converted on another power play opportunity nine minutes into the final period. Rideout notched her goal one minute later with assists Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) and Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON). That tally brought the score to 5-2 but the Pioneers would get no closer and eventually fell 7-2.
The Pioneers were outshot 46-20 and allowed two power play goals in just five opportunities. Sacred Heart will look to earn the weekend series and season series split as these two teams take the ice again in tomorrow's finale at 7:35 in Pittsburgh, PA.
