Sacred Heart Finishes Non-Conference Slate With Loss at #19 Princeton

Box Score

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team played at #19 Princeton for its final non-conference match-up of the season and fell by a score of 7-1 at the Hobey Baker Rink.

Senior forward David Berube (Quebec, Que.) scored the only goal of the game for the Pioneers.  Sophomore defenseman Alex Stuart (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) fired a shot on net, followed up by a shot by classmate Eric Delong (Oakville, Man.).  The second rebound landed in front of Berube as he flew into the slot and lifted the puck over the Princeton goaltender.

The Tigers posted three goals in the first period.  The first was an even strength score by junior Brodie Zuk, followed by a shorthanded goal from senior Mike Kramer, and a power play goal by sophomore Eric Meland.

In the second period, Princeton added to its lead with three more goals as the Tigers outshot the Pioneers 25-6.  Princeton scored a power play, delayed penalty extra man, and even strength goal in the second frame.

Senior goalie Alan Reynolds needed only 19 saves to earn the victory in just his fourth start of the season.  For Sacred Heart, junior Oliver St. Onge (Wickham, Que.) started in net, but was pulled after giving up three goals and making four saves in less than 10 minutes.  In relief, sophomore Steven Legatto (Kelowna, B.C.) looked sharp between the pipes, making 48 saves, despite giving up four scores.  His save total tied for the second most he has made in a single game this season.

For the game, Princeton outshot SHU 59-20.  It is the fifth time this season that the Pioneers have allowed more than 50 shots on goal in a game.

The loss drops the Red & White to 3-16-5 on the season, while Princeton improved to 12-6-1.

Sacred Heart is back in action as American International visits the Milford Ice Pavilion for a 7:05 pm Atlantic Hockey contest on Friday night.
