Box Score 2 (Gorham, ME) – The Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team earned a tie and a win in a two-game series on the road against the University of Southern Maine Huskies this week, skating to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday before winning 4-1 on Wednesday.
Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH)scored hear team-leading ninth goal of the season to open the scoring at 10:14 of game one's second period, set up by Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) on her team-best 11th assist. The Huskies tied the game at 7:27 of the third on a power play goal by Julia Pearl, with assists going to Shannon Cronin and Christen Hart.
SHU outshot USM 29-24 for the game, and Alexius Shutt (Elk River, MN) made 23 saves for the Pioneers.
On Wednesday, The Pioneers jumped to an early lead behind two first-period goals. Palazzo netted her her eighth of the year, with Robbins picking up the assist, 2:04 into the game on the power play. Cara Curran (Westford, MA) made it 2-0 SHU with her first career goal, with Catherine Chittick (Hingham, MA) assisting for her first career point at 13:33.
After Hart put the Huskies on the board 5:58 of the second, Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) made it a two-goal lead again late in the second. Her left-wing shot deflected in off a defender with 1:34 remaining before the intermission, with Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA) and Brianna Connolly (Duxbury, MA) getting credit for the helpers.
Schutt made the lead stand up with a game-total of 31 saves, including 24 in the final two periods. Meagan Souza (Wilmington, MA) added insurance at 14:45 of the third, assisted by Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) and Jamie Mey (Middletown, RI).
Ten different players registered goals for a balanced Sacred Heart attack in the two-game series. The Pioneers are now 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, and host Penn State for two games this weekend at the Wonderland of Ice.
