POUGHKEEPSIE N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's fencing team kicked off their 2014-2015 dual meet season with a sweep at the 2014 Vassar Invitational. Sacred Heart was perfect on the day with wins over Haverford (19-8), Yeshiva (24-3), Lafayette (19-8), Hunter (21-6), Stevens Tech (18-9) and Vassar (15-12).
The keynote match of the day was against a strong Vassar team. The foil and epee squads finished with identical 7-2 records with Vassar winning the epee and Sacred Heart the foil by identical marks. This left the contest up to the saber squads. Senior captain Thomas Gerrity rose to the occasion with a perfect 3-0 result against Vassar's very talented saber squad and was joined by inspired performances by sophomore Schulyer Milone (2-1) and freshman Daniel Marchelitis (1-2) for a solid 6-3 win in saber. Stevens Tech was another hotly contested match but all three weapons won by 6-3 marks for the 18-9 victory.
Foil was the overall leader on the day, going 45-9. They were led by Senior All-American Andrew Holmes (10-1), sophomore James Turner IV (12-2) and freshman Tyler Endee (9-2). Epee and saber both posted identical 36-18 marks. Grad Student Kevin Almerini led epee with a 9-3 record, including a 3-0 sweep of a strong Stevens Tech squad by a 15-2 cumulative score. Gerrity (10-3) and Milone (9-3) paced the saber squad.
"This was a satisfying result today but it was not without its moments", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "With two starters out, we knew that Vassar and Stevens Tech would be real challenges. The epee team knows what it needs to work on for our big conference matches next weekend. I can't say enough about how far our saber squad has come this year. Gerrity's game has jumped up his senior year and he is inspiring Milone and Marchelitis to follow him. Danny has made a nice transition to college fencing and he is well ahead of expectations for moving to college fencing. I can't say enough for how well this group has embraced the strategies of the saber coaching staff (Matt Laudicina and CJ Fleck)."
"Andrew Holmes is on his way to another great season in foil and I am very pleased with the transition that Tyler Endee is making as a freshman," Vrabel added. "James Turner is emerging as a solid C strip and I think that foil is in good shape. With the exception of the Vassar match, Kevin Almerini was dominant today. Overall I would say that this is the most balanced team that we have had in a long time. We will do everything possible to be ready for our tough matches next week in conference action.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, November 15 at MIT in Boston for the Northeast Fencing Conference Meet # 1. Action will begin at 10 AM.
