POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team started the second half of their season Sunday at the Vassar Fencing Challenge by going 3-1. SHU defeated Cleveland State in two matches by identical 21-6 scores and Detroit 20-7 but lost a close match to NJIT 14-13.
The epee squad led the way with a 31-5 record. Khristopher White had another perfect day (7-0), including a sweep of the talented NJIT squad. Kevin Almerini (7-1), Matt Love(5-0), Cody Richard (4-1), Jon Jacovino (5-2), and Steven Frappier (3-1) also posted solid performances. The foil squad (26-11) was again led by SHU's All-American Andrew Holmes (7-1), with James Turner (7-1), Tyler Endee (4-1) and Erik Von Fischer (3-1) also having winning days. The saber squad went 18-18 led by Schuyler Milone (7-5).
"This was a nice bounce back performance for the team", said head Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Our saber squad was pretty depleted today, and despite this we almost pulled off a win against NJIT who has very talented epee and foil squads. While we did take the epee in that match by a 6-3 score, we could have done better in that weapon. Overall , I was very pleased by how well Khris White, Andrew Holmes and Kevin Almerini performed against NJIT. We are getting our confidence back in epee and this will be critical for us to continue our run towards the NFC Championship when we complete our conference season three weeks from now at Dartmouth"
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday, January 25th at the Philadelphia Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania's fencing facility. Action will begin at 10 AM.
