PROVIDENCE, R.I. (December 7, 2014)—Alissa Tarsi (Clinton, N.J.) led the Pioneers for the second straight day with 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Sacred Heart women's basketball team lost a close one to Drexel 61-54 in its final game of the Brown Classic. Tarsi, who totaled 30 points shooting 45.5% from the floor in two games, was named to the Brown Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Dragons jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but back-to-back baskets from senior Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) brought the Pioneers back within one point before Hannah Kimmel (Harpursville, N.Y.) laid one in to give SHU a brief lead.
Moments later Kelsi Lidge's layup sparked a nine-point Drexel run, holding SHU scoreless for over four minutes. Kelcey Castro (Fairlawn, N.J.), making her first start as a Pioneer, broke the streak hitting a triple from the top of the key cutting Drexel's lead to five points, 19-14.
The Dragons maintained the lead Johanna Lopez (Silver Spring, Md.) stole the ball driving down the lane for a layup kick starting a seven-point SHU run, which Kimmel capped off with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 26 with less than minute remaining in the half. But with 30 seconds on the clock Drexel's Sarah Curran's jumper set SHU into halftime trailing 28-26.
Curran notched the first basket, but Kimmel and Castro, who tallied 11 points in the loss, combined for five points to give the Pioneers their first lead of the half. Curran quickly rebounded with consecutive baskets reclaiming the lead for Drexel, 34-31.
Lopez and Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) put in consecutive layups minimizing the Dragons' lead to just one point, 39-38, but Rachel Pearson halted the run draining her sixth triple of the game.
That was as close as SHU would get as Curran's 21 second-half points led Drexel in holding off the Pioneers.
Next Sunday, the Pioneers travel to Hartford to face the Hawks at 2:00 p.m.
