PORTLAND, Maine –Heather Daley tried to spark a late Sacred Heart comeback, scoring with 2:20 remaining in the third to get SHU within one, but it was not enough as the women's ice hockey team fell, 2-1, at Southern Maine on Wednesday evening. The Huskies used goals late in the first and early in the third to improve to 3-8-1 on the year. The loss ends the Pioneers two game winning streak and drops them to 5-7-0.
SHU would have its best offensive period in the third, with more shots, ten, than the seven in the first two combined, but could not get one by Liz Bergstrom until Daley's goal. It was the junior's third goal of the year and was set up by Hanna Skelley and Briana Connolly. The Pioneers pulled Nicole Magee with 43 seconds remaining but were not able to get the puck into the Huskies' zone.
Southern Maine held a 25-17 edge in shots for the game, including 16-7 in the first two periods. Bergstrom saved 16 of the 17 efforts that she faced, to improve to 3-5-0 on the year. In her second appearance of the season, Magee stopped 23 shots in the defeat to have her record fall to 1-1-0. There were only three penalties called all game, with USM going 0-2 on the man advantage.
USM came out strong in the first period, outshooting SHU, 9-3, but could not get on the scoreboard until there was 3:13 left before the first intermission. Julia Pearl finally beat Magee after she gathered a rebound from Katie Couture's shot at the left post and sent it into the net for her first goal of the year.
The second period only saw eleven shots total, a 7-4 edge for the Huskies, as both goalies held strong to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the third. Just three minutes into the final period, the Huskies would add to their advantage, as Couture scored at the 17:01 mark. The goal resulted from a two-on-one opportunity set up by Pearl. She got the puck to Lynn Kozlowski, who dropped the puck off to Couture. The sophomore patiently waited for an angle before finally sending her shot past Magee.
Sacred Heart continues its road trip on Friday, with a 4 pm start at the University of New England.
