Sacred Heart Skates to First Tie of Season at New England, 1-1

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine – After Casey Stathopoulos tied the game at, 1-1, thirty one seconds into the second period, neither team could manage to beat the goalie again, as the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team tied the University of New England on Friday evening. Both goalies made thirty plus saves, with Amanda Fontaine stopping 35 of 36 shots for the Pioneers, and Samantha Scobee registering 31 saves on 32 shot attempts for UNE. The Pioneers are now 5-7-1 on the year, while the Nor'Easters move to 3-7-2.

Having done so three out of four times in the game, SHU would have to kill off one more power play in the overtime period after an interference call with 2:52 remaining. The Pioneer defense held strong and Fontaine saved two UNE shots to give Sacred Heart one more shot at recording the overtime win. Skating at even strength, Taylor Moreland would get off the last shot of the game late in the period, but Scobee made one last stop to preserve the tie.

Shots were even throughout much of the game, with the Nor'Easters holding a slight, 36-32, advantage for the game. While New England went 1-5 on the power play, the Pioneers only got one opportunity just 2:28 into the game, and Scobee saved all three shots.

Mellissa Bourdeau put the Nor'Easters up late in the first period by way of the power play on a shot from the left dot. Gabriella Moscato and Marissa Biederman assisted on the goal, 1:48 before the first intermission.

It did not take SHU long to respond, as it scored just 2:19 minutes of game time later with 19:29 on the second period clock. Stathopoulos stripped a UNE skater in Sacred Heart's zone and burried her second touch inside the right post. The senior's goal was her sixth of the year and put her into the team-lead with 17 points.

After 37 shots combined in the first two periods, the third period saw both teams go for the win, as the two combined for 25 attempts on goal, with a slight 13-12 edge for UNE. Both goalies were up to challenge though, and after each team recorded three shots, the game ended 1-1.

Sacred Heart and the Nor'Easters will meet again tomorrow at 1 pm.
